We encourage participation in extra-curricular courses -- not only does it provide for a more rewarding program experience, it enhances the students' language learning and can also equip them with new skills useful in a host family, school, or business setting. The details below are examples of opportunities, but we can try to grant other requests.

Arts & Information
Photography for Fun: Documenting Your American Experience - This course is designed to teach the basics of digital photography as well as visual presentation. It starts with an overview of good composition, lighting, and getting the most out of your digital camera. We will also explore cretive techniques to inspire your travel photography. After becoming confident with the camera, you will learn to choose your best images to print as well as where and how to print them. This course finishes up with a segment on organizing and "scrapbooking" your best images. You will leave this course feeling confident with your digital camera and inspired to take great photos. As well, you will complete your own mini travel scrapbook of your weeks in America. Pre-requisite: digial camera and memory card. Printing costs, scrapbook and paper supplies included. (two hour sessions).
American Cooking - Students will explore preparation of classic American foods and have the opportunity to eat their creations. This is a three-session course on-site with the chef at the General Denver hotel. Class size is limited to eight students. All foods and materials, any needed transportation included in class fee.
Academic Computing - This is a fabulous opportunity to learn from someone that has lived and adjusted to settings of various countries, fluent in English, French, and Spanish -- one of Wilmington College's top professors. The objective of this short course is to ensure that all students will be able to use Microsoft programs - mainly Word and PowerPoint for classroom assignments. Instruction for Word includes typing exercises, preparing an essay, using spell check, using grammar check and formatting a paper. PowerPoint instruction will cover preparation of a presentation, clip art, formatting, video clips, automatic running presentations and printing notes. Familiarity with the American keyboard will be a focus. Should students surpass the skills listed above, the professor is prepared to build upon established skills and take the students as far as they can go! Materials included. (two hours sessions)
Newswriting - Award-winning writer, Rachel Colliver, of the Wilmington News Journal will help students learn and understand the concepts of writing for an American newspaper. This class would prepare students for future involvement with their high school newspapers. Students will need to bring a spiral notebook and pen or pencil to the sessions.
Creative Writing - An opportunity to work on skills needed for upper-level English classes in the American classroom setting. A published writer will share her passion for writing for pleasure and the audience. Participants should be prepared with a notebook or folder and favorite writing utensil.
Yarn Art - The teacher is a recent high school graduate known for her creative ability. Her fashionable scarves earn frequent public mention. Students will learn basic crochet and/or knitting with the goal of making their own scarf to wear or give as a gift. Class will meet once per week for the camp's duration. Yarn and tool materials are included in the course fee.
Chocolate Making - Do you have a passion to create fun food? Well then you don't want to miss this opportunity! A Chocolate designer will lead students in making delicious treats to take with them at the end of class. There are so many amazing things that can be done with chocolate, and during this class participants will begin to discover that chocolate is not only yummy but it is fun to work with too. In this hands-on course students will have the chance to create their own suckers, truffles, and dipped chocolates! (One 3-hour session - class size 8-15).
Music Exploration
Bell Choir - Students of all musical abilities - none to advanced - can participate! One of Wilmington College's music professors will introduce the concept of bell ringing and lead the group through the various techniques involved in making beautiful sound. Two to three octave arrangements will be examined, practiced, and eventually performed. The more participants, the greater potential and learning from the experience, as this will be a new form of musical exploration for most! This class will be once per week for the program's duration and will take place at Wilmington's First Christian Church. Gloves, music, and bells will be provided.
Flute choir - students with previous flute experience will love this playing opportunity and exploration of chamber music! Two of the community's top flutists will come together to offer this class. Music will be provided, students need to bring their instrument and be prepared to play in a group with others to cover all parts of a musical score.
Piano Music/Computer Arranging - The Assistant Professor of Music at Wilmington College wants to give students with previous piano experience the chance to "play around" in a state-of-the-art Music Computer Lab at the new Boyd Center. Participants will explore their current musical knowledge, build upon it, and compose music to arrange and print. Lab time and supplies are provided. (Three sessions).
Private lessons - Some students will want to continue study of their chosen instrument during their program. Customized individual schedules can be arranged for several instrument preferences in the studios at For A Song and a Story - for example: clarinet, piano and saxophone. Price per 30-minute session will vary per instructor, based on thier professional position and level of expertise. Number of classes and length of session to be determined based on student request.
Piano Duets - Interested in some casual piano fun? Take some time out and learn to play piano along with someone else! Students should have a basic command of musical knowledge and previous piano experience. Music will be provided, as well as a friend to tickle the ivories with. One-hour sessions will be held at Wilmington's First Christian Church.
Outdoor Adventure
Equestrian Basics - Members of a local youth pony club will take participating students through basic horse and pony care and feeding needs. Students will learn the animal mannerisms and get to interact with the animals in a friendly way, in the stable environment. The stable manager will also give input on riding techniques and a demonstration will be done by the Pony Club. This is a perfect opportunity to take part in hands-on activity with like-aged kids while experiencing the beauty of a common midwestern setting! Course includes supplies, instruction and demonstration, and transportation. (One session).
Caving/Backpacking - If you like the outdoors -- this one's for you!! An experienced and certified caver and backpacker, originally from the Netherlands, will take students to one of Ohio's explorative areas. Students will learn and utilize basic safety and sporting skills. Participants will need to have an adventurous spirit and have reasonable physical ability. This will be a day trip - Equipment, supplies, and transportation included. (One day session; pending availability of instructor).
Sports
Swimming Skills Class - Whether you don't know how to swim, or just want to learn how to swim correctly, this fun class will be perfect for you. Students will learn all of the basic swimming strokes including freestyle, backstroke, breastroke, and elementary backstroke. At the end of the class you will feel comfortable swimming in a pool or in a natural body of water, like a lake. So grab your bathing suit and jump in for some fun! (Class size 5-10; 6 sessions - one hour each).

Rock Climbing Wall- At Joy Outdoor Education Center, the wall is inside the Proctor & Gamble Learning Center making it available year round, regardless of weather conditions. This activity blends the excitement of rock climbing with the valuable lessons learned through the Belay School. Individuals rotate through the positions of climber, primary and secondary belayer and coach, learning the power which teams generate through shared leadership and intrinsic motivation. Materials, gear, chaperones, and instruction included in this Team Leadership exercise. (One session; price varies depending on number of participants).

Vortex
Kings Island Amusement Park - If you like rollercoasters -- hold on to your hat! With 13 world class coasters, Paramount's Kings Island is a favorite for teens. They can challenge the Son of Beast - the tallest, fastest and only looping wooden coaster on the planet! Get upside down six times on Vortex. Fly forwards and backwards on Face/Off. Feel the freefall on Drop Zone or just simply hang out with friends and ride the tide at Crocodile Dundee's Boomerang Bay, the Aussie-themed water park resort. There are games and shows too - it is all at the park! Nightly fireworks concludes the experience. Transportation, park admission, and meal options are included. participants will want to dress appropriately for weather and bring sunscreen, camera, and spending money for souvenirs. (summer program only).
Scene from Blue Jacket
Blue Jacket Outdoor Drama - Our group is lucky to have diverse connections to the performing arts! This show has surpassed it's 25th anniversary season, so students are in for a special show. The play is about the life of Shawnee Chief Blue Jacket, a white man, who was adopted by the Shawnee Indians. He was given the Shawnee name Wey-ya-pih-ehr-sehn-weh, or Blue Jacket, because of the blue hunting jacket he wore. In the drama, Blue Jacket is attracted to the Indian way of life, lives his life as a member of the Shawnee tribe, and, together with other Shawnee Indians, fought the white man over land. Ultimately, Blue Jacket was named War Chief of the Shawnee Nation. This is a terrific opportunity for students to learn and experience part of American history, as it is brought to life right before their eyes! Transportation, seated admission, pre-show tour/activities, and meal are included. (summer program only).
